BOO! It’s a cavity.

Just kidding. However, in all seriousness, we do want to offer some tips to you and your family since Halloween is coming up and we don’t want to have scares like that!

At Derna Dental, we know that Halloween is a fun and exciting time. It can also be a nerve-wracking experience for parents. Halloween sets off the sweet tooth. Candy is one of the first things we think of when we think of Halloween, second only to costumes. Though candy and chocolates are yummy, it is important to teach your kids how to eat them responsibly; holding sugar in their mouths is one of the fastest ways to those pesky cavities.

Check it out:

Brush, Floss, and Rinse. Then Do it Again.
Following their normal hygiene routine is extremely important. Brushing away bacteria will help get rid of that extra sugar that cakes on their teeth from the tasty treats. Your kids will probably be ingesting more of these treats than normal. Flossing will help to loosen any extra food that’s stuck in between each little tooth, and then a good rinse will flush it all out.

Wash it Out!
After having all that candy, give your kids some water. Water will help flush out some of that sugar and prevent bacteria from accumulating, leaving the mouth a little cleaner before the next brushing.

Choose Wisely
Chocolates tend to melt faster and leave less sugar in the mouth than rock-hard candies. The more time sugar spends in the mouth, the more susceptible your mouth becomes to getting hurt by the cavity bug!

Get a Dentist’s Clean
Finally, regular visits to your Derna dentist are important to keep their teeth in the best condition and catch any small problems before they become bigger. A dentist’s clean after a Halloween sugar festival is a great proactive idea!
