Although we do everything we can to repair and save your teeth, sometimes we just need to remove a tooth from your mouth. We understand having a tooth removed can be stressful or upsetting, so Derna Dental, in Surrey, will develop a comprehensive oral care plan to ensure the health and quality of your smile.  Our dentists and friendly staff truly care about your overall wellness and self-confidence!

Why you might need dental extractions:

  • Sometimes it can be absolutely necessary to get rid of a tooth.
  • This might be because a baby tooth has misshapen or long roots that avoid it from falling out as it should have, and the tooth has to be eliminated to make way for a permanent tooth to emerge.
  • A tooth might have so much decay that it puts the surrounding teeth and jaw at further risk of even more decay, so your Surrey dentist at Derna Dental might advise removal and replacement with a bridge or implant.
  • Infection, orthodontic correction, or issues with a wisdom tooth can also call for the removal of a tooth.

How extractions work:

The root of each tooth is held within your jawbone in a “tooth socket,” and your tooth is held in that socket by a ligament. In order to extract a tooth, we will expand the socket and separate the tooth from the ligament holding it in place. While this treatment is generally really fast, we can discuss any of your  concerns or requests for sedation to make yourself more comfortable!

What happens next?

As soon as a tooth has been extracted, the surrounding teeth might move, triggering issues with chewing or with your jaw joint function. To avoid these complications, we can discuss your options and might suggest that you replace the extracted tooth with an implant.
